Chen Jia Gang, a former architect and businessman, is a photographer who focuses on China’s outlying industrial landscape. Chen’s evocative photographs have been exhibited worldwide including Canada, America, France, Italy and China. The title of his widely exhibited series is “Third Front” which explores the landscape of the big industrial towns built in the Cold War (1960s to 70s). This collection establishes Chen as an important cultural innovator and forces our attention on the industralisation of the countryside.

This series shows the Chinese government’s series of initiatives in the 1960s in constructing a new frontier of industrialism in Southern towns. Just as quickly as they were erected, these frontiers became isolated and disappeared only a couple of decades later. Chen said in an interview that “Third Front shows the powerful physical effects of political consciousness” and he captured the infrastructures in these under-developed provinces to remark on the footprint left behind by revolutionary concept of social idealism. In addition, Chen’s works challenge the complicated relationship between human development, resources and the environment.
